Saving On Real Food

Each week at the Farmer’s Market, I have been buying some berries. (This week I am on the hunt for more, hopefully blueberries!) While I can only eat so many berries now, I am also working within my budget to stock up on some fresh fruit for the winter.

frozen berriesFreeze your berries for between 24-48 hours spread out on a cookie sheet.  If you freeze them like this, they won’t all clump together in the freezer.

Use a good quality freezer bag and place the berries in there, leaving some room and trying to remove all the air you can.

Place the bags in your freezer.  If you have a full freezer, you may want to label the berries with the date preserved.

I have 3 bags of berries to use for winter cobblers or I can pop a handful into my gluten free granola or oatmeal.

YUM!

What are your favorite berries?

I know you are used to a recipe on Tuesday mornings, but with the end of the school year, I haven’t had time to cook any new gluten-free creations this week.

I did however end up in Huntersville twice this week.  (One was for Savings Nation, and the other was purely coincidental.)

On our way back home, hubby calls out, “Hey.  There is a store that looks like you would like it.”

When I looked up, I saw this bright and shiny Earth Fare.  I immediately begged to go in.  You see, I have never been to an Earth Fare…..a Trader Joe’s….. or even a Whole Foods.   Seeing that pretty Earth Fare felt like it was put there just to brighten my day (after the recent Harris Teeter news).

Oh.my.word.

They even had coupon booklets as you walked through the door.  And tearpads all over the store.  It was like I had died and gone to heaven.

I could not believe the gluten-free goodness that my eyes beheld in that store.  Hubby laughed at me and said I was acting like a little girl.  But then he told me to buy what I wanted.   That concept is so foreign to me, that I didn’t know what to do at first.  You mean people can buy what they want without coupons?!?!  Well, I did.

Only once or twice in the store did the little voice in my head say, “I wish I had the sales flyer and all my coupons.”

Oh, and maybe just as I wheeled my cart up to the cashier… I thought, “I bet I have $150 of food in my cart.” And I might have had a little panic.

Well, luckily I didn’t have QUITE that much.  But I did spend $112.  Yep, $112.

But look at all the gluten-free goodness that I can eat all summer long.  I had Kind Gluten-free Granola the past two mornings for breakfast.

And I loved it.

I told hubby that I cannot go back there for at least 3 months, because our budget would be torn to pieces if I set foot in that store more often than that.  I simply couldn’t say “no” in there.

What stores tempt you to splurge on occasion?

I disclose: I think I am in love with Earth Fare.  No, they did not pay me to say that.  I wish they had, so I could go back and spend more money there.  ;)

Real Food

A couple of my Facebook friends shared their tips for saving on meat yesterday:

Angelina says she buys clearanced meat and freezes it.  (Great tip!)

Deborah says she buys larger/bulk cuts of meat, and her hubby cuts it for her.  She has roasts, kabob pieces, steaks, and meat chunks for recipes for around $2.99/lb.  Buying in bulk or meat that hasn’t been cut much can save on the cost!

Thanks for sharing ladies!

Real Food

This week at my local store, regular strawberries were $1.99/lb. and organic ones were $2.77/lb.  That really isn’t a tremendous price difference.

Each week, scan your store flyers for any produce that is super cheap during the week. Those are the items that are usually in season at the time. Plan your meals around those items!

I don’t care if you love watermelon, for Pete’s sake, don’t buy one in December.  It isn’t going to taste as good as you want it to, and it will cost a fortune.  ;)

Real Food

If you can’t grow a garden OR you don’t have a cheap farmer’s market nearby, you can consider joining a CSA.

Here is how a CSA is defined on LocalHarvest.org.

A farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

Do any of you participate in a CSA?

Real Food

There are sometimes coupons for real foods:

  1. Here lately Earthbound Farms has been rocking the coupons!
  2. Sometimes Mambo Sprouts has real food coupons.
  3. Whole Foods has coupons that can be redeemed in their store.

Remember that organic does not equal real food all the time though!

What are some sources you have found for real food coupons?
