Budget

It is being predicted that with the current drought in the Midwest that grocery prices could go up 3-4% next year.  If the drought continues, that could increase even more.  As usual, I am concerned about what that will do to my budget and yours too!

What does that mean for the average American?

Prices are already higher  on many items now than they have been in several years.  The drought means that you will probably spend at least 4% more on your food purchases in 2013 than you did in 2012.

What can you do now?

  • Begin watching for great prices or mark downs on meat, and stock your freezer.
  • Consider making a bulk beef or pork purchase while prices are lower.
  • Freeze summer produce now and continue to stock up on frozen produce throughout the winter as it fits in your budget.
  • Consider buying grains, like flour, rice, and oats in bulk. These can be stored in proper containers and kept in cool, dark places for long periods of time.
  • Look for sales on cereal, and always buy the box with the longest expiration date.
  • Watch for sales on canned goods, and stock up when the price is right.

What can you do (now and) later?

  • Buy local foods, especially local produce.
  • Plan to spend a little more in your grocery budget.
  • Be conscientious about watching the sales and using coupons when possible.
  • Reduce your meat intake and consider 1-2 meatless dinner meals per week.
  • Watch clearance and markdown bins for perishable food items that can be preserved or frozen.

It is my goal here at Coupon Teacher for us all to save money and stay within our budget, which is why I started teaching Savings Nation classes.

What will you do to prepare for possible rising food costs?

September Budget Update

October 2, 2011

I have not shopped much this month.  Plus, much of my shopping was done without coupons!  (Yikes!)

We are making good progress on paying for some of the things we needed to pay for like our shed.  I am not sure I will meet my goal of all non-secured debt being gone by the year’s end, but we will be close!

I also made a couple trips to the farmer’s market this month that I am not including in my totals.  I don’t really know how to quantify how much I spent and saved.  I do know I have truly enjoyed the fresh produce, and that I have saved some over grocery store prices.

Shelf Price: $397.22

Saved: $221.84

Spent: $175.88

Percentage Saved: 55.85%

Although I loved it when I was saving in the 70% range, I just don’t have the time to hunt the deals like I used to!  Over 50% savings in today’s economy pleases me just fine.   It seems like people don’t want to share if they saved less than 60%.  I say BAH to that.  Savings is savings!  I saved over $200 this month by watching the sales and coupons!

How did you do this month?

So, I am not telling you who had receipts all over her house…. But that someone finally had time to enter them into her spreadsheet today.  ;)

I usually try to update you on my budget on the 1st, but the 5th works too right?

We are still working on paying down some debts, but overall, I am happy with our progress!

Considering I stocked up for back to school, I was pretty pleased with our grocery shopping for this month too!

Total Shelf Cost:  $802.36

Total Savings:     $534.99

Amount Paid (after rebates):   $267.37

Savings Rate:   66.68%

Not too bad for a busy teacher during the first month of school!

How was your August budget?

Summer is expensive.  That is my story and I am sticking to it.  (It probably didn’t help that we went on vacation, and I went to a blogging conference this month…!)

We will have to take the next couple of months easy to let our bank account recover a bit.  No problem though, because fall is usually so busy that I have no time to spend money anyway!

I almost made my 70% goal at the grocery and drug stores this month!

Total Shelf Cost: $483.71

Savings: $338.28

Total Spent: $145.42

Percentage Saved: 69.93%

I feel like I am finally back into the savings game!

How did you do in July?

You all know I try to be honest with you.  Especially when it comes to the budget update.

For almost a year, we bought very few things.  We saved.  We scraped.  We paid off debts.

In May, we bought our house.  Buying our house seems to have unleashed a huge spending spree.  Namely by me.  Things for the house, clothes for me, stockpile items, you name it I have bought it in May and June.  Now be sure, I have still been getting good deals.  I have just been buying too much in too short of a time frame.  The budget needs time to catch up.

The bills are coming in.  We can pay them.  Barely.  I really, really need to rein in my spending again.

I know some of you are the same, so let’s encourage each other!  I am hoping to get back to saving for purchases before we make them!!

Grocery Budget

Shelf Cost: $695.13

Out of Pocket Cost: $242.21 (see, I told you!)

Rebates: $10.00

Percentage Saved: 65.16%

These past few months with the move have not been the best ever…

I am going to make at least 70% savings my goal for July!

How is your budget looking?

May Budget Update

June 1, 2011

Ouch!  That is all I have to say about moving, the end of the school year, and my grocery budget.

Here is to hoping that the summer brings lots of savings!

Keep in mind that I didn’t hardly shop in April, and that we closed on our house the first week of May.  Coupons were the last thing on my mind.

Total Shelf Cost: $571.46

Savings: $349.44

Total Spent: $222.02

Percentage Saved: 61.15%

But, I do have good budget news to share!  We paid off the large unsecured debt that we have been working on paying off for several years!

Now we are working on paying for some home purchases we have made, since we have moved.

New debt goals (these are long term, as in a few years…):

1. Pay off home purchases. (all are at 0%!)

2. Pay off vehicle loans.

3. Save 3-6 months of living expenses.

4. Pay extra to our home principle.

What are your long term money goals?
