My grandma recently moved in with my mama. Since I have been spending a week at mama’s house, I have seen my grandma more this week than I have in the 11 years I have lived in NC.
Here are 3 thrifty lessons she has taught me this week.
- Don’t waste food. We worked on cleaning mama’s cabinets out. Grandma cringed each time we had to throw something out. She eats half a banana for breakfast, wraps the other half up and eats it for evening snack. She does her best to eat everything on her plate. She was upset at mama for having to throw out a little brown lettuce. I think we can all learn a lesson from this. Do your best to not waste things.
- It is ok to take your vitamins. Grandma smoked for years. She has also taken lots of vitamins since I have been alive. We always used to tease her about the vitamins being what was keeping her alive. She is almost 80 years old and still here. Now, I am not saying you should overdose on vitamins. But talk to your doctor about your diets and vitamin needs. Eat healthy and take the vitamins you need (if any). A good diet and healthy body will save you on healthcare costs.
- Read the newspaper. Grandma still reads the newspaper each day. So far this week, she has checked out sale flyers, looked at coupons, found recipes, and was entertained. If you think about it, a subscription to the newspaper is not too expensive if you consider all the things it can provide. I have a link for discount subscriptions too.
Thanks for the lessons grandma!
