Today we have a great post from Laura from A Frugal Chick!
Recently in a coupon class a participant told me a fantastic story. She was checking out in one of our local grocery stores. After ringing up her items the young man looked around, quietly leaned toward her and whispered “Do you have something you want to show me?”
Needless to say she was surprised! He had seemed like such a nice young man. Seeing her look of dewilderment he said “Show me your ID- it’s senior day and you can get 5% off! I am not supposed to ask but I hate to see people miss the discount.”
There are all kinds of discounts out there that we miss. Some of them we don’t know about because stores don’t advertise them. Seniors, Military, Civil Servants, Teachers and Students are all eligible to receive discounts on everything from haircuts to electronics.
If you fall into one of those categories here are some suggestions to find out about discounts:
1. ASK! If you are already in the store with your ID just ask the cashier as you are checking out. Cell phone companies have many discounts based on employment and people rarely ask. If you are making an online purchase make sure to check for promotional codes!
2. Check the web. If you are comfortable on the computer go onto the website of the place you are about to shop and look around. You can also google the store name + the discount you want to use and see if anything pops up. Or check out sites like Savings.com and look for codes!
3. Talk To Other People In Your Same Situation. Are you a teacher? Ask around and see what discounts others are taking advantage of. If you are a student, go to your student life office and see if they have any advice.
By taking advantage of these additional discounts (which are usually after coupons) you can save even more on your purchases!
Laura Oliver spends most of her time blogging at A Frugal Chick. She has a serious addiction to Rite Aid and loves teaching coupon classes. Her greatest challenge so far in life has been figuring out Twitter.

I LOVE my Student Discount at Harris Teeter! Flash my ID and WOW 5% off everyday!
I went to Harris Teeter today and they told me they don’t offer student discounts : (
I loved the city employee dscount I used to get as a teacher!
I love the discounts we get for being long time customers.
This is so true! We just found out after YEARS that we can get a discount on our cell phone because my husband works for the county as a police officer! All this time we could have been saving! OUCH! Now I ask everyone!
SO true! I never fail to ask for a military discount. Many times, if I am purchasing a bigger ticket item, and the store does not usually offer the discount, if you ask politely and then ask to speak with the manager, I have learned that the managers are willing to give you a discount…even if they have to put it in as an employee discount. They would rather make the sale and lose the 10 – 20% rather than not make the sale at all. It never hurts to ask!
Hubby gets a discount on our Verizon cell phone service. We had no idea!
The place where I work belongs to the local chamber of Commerce and they give us the discount to a number of local shops around town I flash that discount card wherever I go.
We receive several discounts from my hubby’s job! We just show his work badge to get it! Verizon gives us 28% off our phone service! Some of the deals are really great! Thanks for sharing!
LOL at the “do you want to show me something” !! i have seen people refuse discounts. not me!! i love ‘em!!
Great ideas! We always forget about AAA discounts.
Michaels now gives teachers a 15% discount on your total purchase – this includes sales items (but not Clearance). Tuesdays are AARP day – show your ID (if you have one) for 10%. Discounts cannot be stacked though.
I have AAA now, and I still haven’t gotten around to finding out about discounts!
Love the comment about Twitter – I’m still trying to grasp it after several months. I didn’t post anything for the 1st month for fear someone would yell at me for doing the wrong thing!
I love my government employee discount through Verizon and Dell!!
I homeschool my kids so I get a teachers discount at The Limited I think it’s 20% off all the time. My favorite is adobe software, I can order the teachers edition for 80% off.
