February Budget Update

March 1, 2011

Well, February flew by.  And with it came the doctor bills.  And the signs of a tax bill (yes, when you have two incomes and no children, you have a tax bill).  And some other unexpected expenses. Our money is flying away just about as fast as the month did!

Luckily, I receive my yearly supplement from my county in February as well.  We might just get everything paid off!

Other good news:

I spent a lot less at the grocery and drug stores this month than last month!

Grocery and Drug Store Totals:

Shelf Cost:  $482.04

Savings: $365.14

Total Out of Pocket:  $116.90

Savings Percentage: 75.75%

How did you do this month?  Any unexpected expenses like us?

I only saved 22% in January but have doubled that in February so I’m happy. I’m spending a little more at the minute trying to build a stockpile (especially meat-wise) so I’m thrilled!

Not to be nosy, but what supplement from the county do you get? Also, I know you’re very money savvy, but I wanted to check–do you choose to owe taxes instead of get a refund? I know many people have a preference, I just want you to know it is your choice how you have your taxes withheld–if you both complete your W4 forms at single and 0, it would be nearly impossible to owe (and you may find single and 1 works even). if you have any questions, feel free to contact me–I do budget counseling as a career!

Most counties in NC offer teachers a certain % supplement in addition to the teacher salary schedule.

I think my hubby has 0 and single, and I have 0 and married withholding (I think). We always have to pay. Always. It is ok with me though, as long as we aren’t overpaying.

Thanks for the offer Amanda!

Anytime! Although for many people, their refund is their only “savings,” I personally think for many people it’s better to owe than get a refund–ESPECIALLY since in recent years some states haven’t had money to pay everyone’s refund on time! And for example, if the government doesn’t pass it’s new budget by Friday (or a compromise that include IRS funding), the IRS will process payments only, it will not process refunds. (Interesting fact about teaching in NC! Thanks for the education on that one!)
