If you didn’t already check out how we are Taming the Stockpile by “eating it”, read part one and my menu plan before tackling today’s challenge.
Taming the Freezer
First of all let me say that I have two freezers, one in my refrigerator and one small chest freezer in my laundry room. I highly recommend having a separate freezer for your stockpiling. It aids in purchasing clearance meat and other frozen products at a discounted price. If you don’t have an extra freezer, consider taking some of your grocery savings to purchase one if you have the space.
Freezer Problem #1:
The first common freezer problem is organization. (At least I hope it is not just me.) When you have a full freezer, it is hard to remember what is at the back or in the bottom, which leads to the second problem.
Solution:
If you have two freezers, put different items in each one. I find that my meat, frozen pizzas and ice cream keep better in my chest freezer. I put items I use more often in my refrigerator freezer. Label everything you package yourself, including date packaged. Put leftovers for freezing in labeled freezer bags or stackable containers.
Freezer Problem #2:
Freezer burn is an enemy of stockpilers. You don’t want to get a bargain on roast beef, only to find it two years later at the bottom with freezer burn.
Solution:
Package the food tightly in freezer safe containers, bags or freezer paper sealed with freezer tape. Many stockpilers use a handy machine called a FoodSaver to store their food properly for freezing. Remove as much air as possible from the storage package. Finally, don’t store items for too long. You can check online for typical freezer times for different foods.
Freezer Problem #3:
Frost. Even if you buy a frost-free freezer, frost can still form. My chest freezer has a bad case of frost right now. Frost can cause your freezer to run less efficiently, and takes up important space too. Frost is caused by humid air inside the freezer, which can come from opening the freezer too often or putting warm, moist foods into the cold freezer.
Solution:
First, make sure your freezer isn’t in need of repair. When possible, allow foods to cool completely in the fridge before placing them into the freezer. Put your freezer in a room with low humidity (unlike my laundry room). Finally, if your freezer has a case of frostbite, defrost it. Choose a cold day, and move all your food into coolers or other freezers. Unplug the freezer and allow the frost time to melt. Use towels to soak up as much moisture as you can before refilling and reorganizing the freezer.
Whew!
If you can do all that, you certainly have taken a big step in Taming Your Stockpile.

Tell me the truth, what does your freezer look like?

My freezer, in theory, is sorted by shelf. Fruit on top, meat in the middle, etc. (I have an upright frostfree.) But… If I come home from grocery shopping and I’m in a hurry, I just jam everything in there. Which I realized again last night when I was tring to find the fennel sauce to go with the salmon cakes (all made with pantry food), and the bread fell on me.
Things fall on me out of the freezer too. Glad to hear I am not the only one!
Oh, and sometimes freezers build up frost or quit working if they are too full. That happened with our last refrigerator. There was no room for the cold air to circulate. I also try to have an inventory of what is in the upright, but it needs to be audited. Maybe this weekend, since I shouldn’t be doing much shopping.
My freezer is the area in which I struggle. We live in a condo right now. All we have is the freezer that is with our refridge. I am constantly filling it up to the max. Right now i am trying to empty it and not buy freezer foods.
That is my goal for the next month. I do not cook a lot because of the hubby’s work schedule so it takes us longer to go through our stock pile.
I know that we can get things fairly cheap but my goal for the year is to save more by just buying what i really need when its on sale. Not to be buying because it is so cheap.
Only having a small freezer is hard. You have to get a little more creative!
I have a stand-up freezer in my stockroom. I painted the front of it with the chalkboard paint (leftover from a friend who painted her kid’s wall). I drew lines with chalk on the door that corresponded with the shelves on the inside. I then wrote what was on each shelf and how many. For the door, I drew a vertical line and wrote in that box. Of course I used colorful chalk (from the dollar store) and it is very useful, but also attractive.
That is a GREAT idea! I think I am off to get some chalkboard paint!!
Yes, very neat idea! When we have a larger house, I will be getting an upright freezer. No room for one here though!
I have three freezers and they are just as packed and messy as yours. I have a side by side freezer/fridge inside the kitchen that I try to only keep leftovers and small items in, a deep freeze in the garage that stores almost everything and a fridge/freezer on top that was given to us that is also in the garage. I use the last mentioned freezer as overflow if I find a lot of good deals and also to keep our hard liquor ice cold! Don’t feel bad, we all try to be organized but it doesn’t always happen.
My biggest grip is my deep freeze doesn’t have a temperature gauge so everything gets frost bitten after a month or two. We live in the desert so I doubt there’s much humidity in my garage, but maybe I’ll try cooling items before putting them in the freezer. Thanks for the tip!!!

I am offended that you called my freezer messy….Just Kidding! It was such a mess that things kept falling on me. You may need to think about replacing that deep freeze…
I also have only one small chest freezer. And it’s full of frost. So much so that the lid doesn’t close correctly. I really need to defrost too. I’m afraid of what might be lurking in the bottom!
I know for sure there is a capon taking up a lot of room. My goal for this week is to thaw and get that thing eaten. French Chicken in a pot, BBQ Chicken Pizza, Matzo Ball Soup and Chicken Stock are all on the menu.
The freezer on my refrigerator could use some attention too. This post is just the motivation I need. Thanks!

Thank you for stopping by Rebecca! You can defrost! It didn’t take me too long. Now I know what I have to cook!
