Coupon Ethics: Using A Lot of Coupons in the Store

Here are my guidelines for using more than one or two coupons in a store:

  • If there is a person behind me with very few items, I ask them to go before me.
  • I try to go to the more experienced cashiers, so that my coupons don’t hold up the line.
  • I try to go shopping at non-peak hours, so the store isn’t terribly busy.
  • If I need to do more than one transaction, I always ask ahead of time and allow others in line to go before me, when possible.  (In other words, I go to the back of the line for my 2nd transaction.)
  • I try to follow all store coupon policies, so that I don’t hold up the line.
  • I will speak up if the cashier misuses, doesn’t scan, or enters a coupon incorrectly.
  • I will speak up if my cashier tells me something that is not in their coupon policy.
  • I will go to customer service if there is a problem on my receipt.

What are some things you do when you plan to use a lot of coupons?

When I walk up to a cashier I am bubbly and always say “I hope that you are ready for me because I have lots of coupons, is that ok with you?” and alot of times they just laugh and say well sure. And if I have a customer behind me that have alot of stuff and I am in the middle of a transaction I let them know that its gonna be a little wait because I have coupons.

I was recently at Target (my regular, go all the time, use lots of coupon Target), where I had printed out two coupons from their website for something-or-other. Those were my only two coupons. I handed the cashier the coupons and she said “We don’t take these.” I said “Well yes, you do, I printed these from the Target website and I’ve used Target-printed coupons before. Is there a problem with these ones?”

Wow!!! I might as well have said that she was ugly, her mother dresses her funny, and I wanted to fight her behind the backstop after school. She turned uber-nasty on me, throwing my bags, my receipt, and of course, not saying another word but glaring the whole time. She did scan the coupons and, imagine that, they scanned just fine! I said “Thank you very much. I hope you have a nice day” and went directly to customer service where I spoke with a manager. I was very polite and low-key, but just told him what had happened and that it didn’t sound like the Target corporate coupon policy. He was very nice and told me he would speak with the cashier. Then, as an afterthought, I mentioned how nasty she turned on me after our exchange.

It’s going to be a loooooong holiday shopping season!

I guess my point was ~ even when I try to follow all the coupon policies, the employees still don’t know what they are sometimes!! :O
