Become a Savvy Shopper in 12 Weeks: Week 1

June 7, 2010

Coupon Teacher Graphic Jpg

Welcome to the 12 week course!  Here are your daily reading assignments and homework assignments.

Monday- Take the time today to set a weekly grocery budget.  If you have a significant other, I want you to involve them in your decision.  Do not set your budget significantly lower than your current one at first. You will begin to see savings, but at first you are going to use those savings for other purposes (like stockpiling).

  • Be realistic. You won’t see significant savings at first, but it will come.
  • Do NOT go over this budget during this course. (Everyone makes mistakes though.)
  • If you can, keep this budget in cash.  You will be less likely to overspend.
  • You budget will greatly vary depending on the money you have available and how many people you have in your family.

Tuesday-You are going to get friendly with coupons throughout this course.  Today I want you to read about several coupon organization methods, and choose the one that you THINK will work best for you.  (Don’t worry, I have used 4 or 5 methods during the past 3 years.)

  • Coupon Binder=The most time consuming method due to cutting and sorting, but the best method to save the most money. This requires a binder (usually around $15), dividers, baseball card sleeves, and usually a few other odds and ends.  This is the best for coupon pros and building a stockpile.
  • Coupon Box or Coupon Caddy (small check file)=This method is medium in time, because the coupons will have to be cut and sorted.  This is the method I used for several years. The problem for me was that I quickly had too many coupons for my caddy. You will need a box or check file with labeled sections.
  • File by Insert=The least work of all coupon organization, because you do not cut them out.  The downside?  Well, you don’t always have the coupons you want when you need them.  You will need an easy filing system, and a small coupon holder for cut coupons. I use this system, because I am on limited time, and I have a big stockpile already.

Wednesday-All you have to do is set up your coupon organization. (Not as easy as it sounds.)  Check out Walmart, the Dollar store, or office supply stores for cheap supplies.

Thursday-Make a space in your home for a small stockpile area.  You may not be on board with this at first, but it is the most important step to help take your savings from 30-40% to 70-80% after time.  I have a shelf in my spare bedroom and in my bathroom.  If you don’t have the extra space, get creative!  How about under the bed containers or over the door hangers? We will talk lots more about stockpiling later, but you do have to have a little space!

Friday-Today you have two assignments.

1. Figure out the biggest circulation newspaper that is available to you.  Either subscribe to it, or find a place where you can pick it up inexpensively on Sunday.  I recommend 1 paper per person in your household. (HINT: It isn’t an assignment, but I would do your best to get started buying a paper this weekend.)  Here is a site that provides newspaper subscriptions at discounted rates.

2. Find a frugal blogger that covers stores in your area.  This will be key for next week’s assignments and to lessen your work load!  I routinely cover several grocery stores and all the drug stores.   Visit BeCentsable, the Frugal Map, and Inexpensively for help.  If you have trouble finding someone who covers your local store, ask me, and I will do my best to help.

Whew!  I told you that the first week would be tough. I decided that one post per week would be best, in case you needed to skip a step or budget your time accordingly.  Hang in there, it gets a lot easier!!!

Do you know anyone who does HEB matchups? I think that's about the only store that I shop at that I don't have matchups for every week! Thanks in advance :) (icemaiden013@gmail.com)

Just wanted to let you know, I'm reading through your series here! My girls and I made an accordion coupon holder. Now to figure out how to get my hands on that many newspapers! Thanks for tweeting it to me! :)

I was just reading through hoping to get some ideas. I am fairly new at this, and love what you're doing here. I was wondering if I could jump in on this even though week 1 has been over for a while now.

Also, I was wondering if you knew any matchup bloggers for the Hampton Roads (Tidewater), Virginia Beach area?

Thanks again for all you're doing to help others :)

I use a combination of two of your methods. I have what is affectionately called “the big honkin’ notebook”, which has two parts (and two separate zippers). The smaller part on top has a large accordian file. I date my newspaper inserts and put them in there. I also keep Publix coupon fliers in another pouch and restaurant coupons in another pouch.
The second section has a zippered pouch that I keep a pair of Fiskars scissors and a permanent marker (to date the inserts) in.
In this second part, I have baseball card holders that I have filed by several categories and I keep Internet coupons and coupons I got in the mail in. I also try to print a list of the coupons in the inserts each month. (That parts a hit or miss.)
I make my store lists each week. Then, I print the list, and it, the coupons that match, and a pen in a Ziploc baggie with the store name on it. I only take that bag in with me.
Over the summer, I usually took my BHN with me and took advantage of clearance items. I’m having to compromise a little bit now with school back in session, but am still saving lots of money. My husband helps make the runs on his days off, too. He likes the Ziploc baggie method.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the lessons.

My daughter shops at Albertsons and an Associated food store in Belgrade Montana. She says that the local newspapers do not have coupon inserts. She uses mostly internet coupons.

I just moved to the Raleigh area and all these stores are new to me! :) I have been shopping mainly at Lowe’s and Kroger. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about Food Lion and I have heard that Harris Teeter is the most expensive. I emailed Kroger and they sent me a coupon policy for my area that stated a manager can deny any coupons they see fit for any reason. This kind of worries me. Have you ever had coupons rejected from there?

Reply

Shelly @ Coupon Teacher May 14, 2011 at 7:08 pm

We actually don’t have a Kroger in my area of NC, but most stores have that line in it. They generally reserve the right to not accept coupons.

Harris Teeter might be expensive for everyday items, but it is a great store for loss leaders. I went to mine today and bought almost $50 worth of stuff for around $8.00.

Hi Shelly, I’m so frustrated with coupon organization right now. I’ve used the small sized coupon organizers that you buy in the stores, the typical little coupon holders. But I had so many coupons I bought another one. So I was using 2 at the store in my cart. I was getting frustrated with this method because I would be going thru them endlessly at the stores and couldn’t seem to keep track of my sales. I know I must sound confusing…sorry! Anyway, I finally bought a zipper binder with the clear baseball insert sheets. Now I am in the midst of putting all my coupons in but now I’m wondering …..with the insert slots so small, how can I read the expiration dates, the coupon product and the cents off when I can’t read the whole coupon at once because the the coupons are all folded up to fit the slots? Ugh, I’m so down about this now trying to find the right method of coupon organization. Can you give me some good advice please? Thanks Shelly! Marilyn

Coupon Teacher May 23, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I use a small file that I keep in my purse, and don’t clip all the coupons.

But even when I did clip them all, I always, always, always pulled the coupons I know I would use out into an envelope or folded paper. That was I wasn’t searching for every coupon in the store.

Hope this helps!

Anyone doing this in Southern Idaho? Twin Falls to be exact? I’ve been doing coupons on & off for a while but never saved as much as i’ve seen the “experts” save, we just don’t seem to have the same great deals that many have in other areas. But i want to keep lower my budget & improving my savings, so i’m working on doing better in many areas :)

I live in Hickory also, I get Hickory Daily Record daily. How do you get multiple coupons. I have seen where people dumpster dive, I am not interested in that but I am interested in how to obtain multiples. I have always used coupons but only one every now and then. With the cost of fuel and food, I hope to take full advantage of coupons now. Thank you for your time to teach all of us “novice” couponers.

Reply

Coupon Teacher May 26, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I buy two Charlotte Observers each week. It has much better coupons than the Hickory Daily Record.

If you want more coupons, you can try a coupon clipper. The one I use and that advertises on my blog is http://couponbeat.com/.

Hope this helps!

We have done this for about two months now, I am working my way thru your 12 week class to learn more tips! :)
I wanted to share one thing that worked for me ~ we use the binder method, which is a bit of work, but we do it as a family. My 80 year old dad loves to sort the flyers, my hubby and son cut them out in bulk, then we sort into food/none food and my daughter and I place into binders. The only difference for our family is we then take an index card box and put everything into it for just CVS, another box for just Publix, etc. that makes it easier for me when I shop, but we DO take the binders with us and leave them in the van…if we see something unexpected on clearance, one of us runs out and gets just that coupon(s).
I can’t wait to read the next 11 weeks!

This is my new summer hobby. I plan to start next week when work days are over.

My question is for my nephews and b-in law in Maryland. My sister was diagnosed with cancer and so they have taken over shopping. They were getting real organized with shopping and menu planning and I could see they wee taking pride in saving money. They had not started using coupons yet. They said their local paper doesn’t have them. I would like to help them out and maybe keep their enthusiasm by making it “game-like”. They shop Giant foods and Wallmart and alocal store that’s name I cannot recall. Can you direct me to a local frugal shopper in Maryland for them?

I am thrilled you are here in NC to teach me.

i’m a newbie to coupons but what i found that works best for me as in organizing is::

i have the ring photo albums which i can add pages to
i have it labeled A-Z
withing the A-Z , I label the brands “a-air wick, aquafresh – b- betty crocker, benefiber … etc.”

works for me because when i need a coupon it’s easy to find, and its compact enough that i can keep in my pocketbook along with my notepad and not lug around a huge binder or have to run back out because i saw a deal .. so i always have my coupons, in case of that “surprise” sale i always end up running into that wasn’t advertised

to some it seems like to much work but to me it works :]

So I began reading your course info Saturday night. I was too anxious to start to wait for all the initial steps to be completed (though I am still working on the steps as assigned because I want to get really good at this) so Sunday morning I looked at the ads, looked online for matching coupons, got my Sunday paper and headed out. I spent $48 for $88 in merchandise, not including my raincheck which will fetch another $7 in savings on $21 of merch. Thank you so much for empowering me to do something I have wanted to do for so long. I was really nervous the whole time that I would mess up and end up spending a lot at the register or being embarrassed but it went well. I did have to endure some long looks while I grabbed 6 boxes of cereal. But it made me happy to pass an aisle that had another young girl flipping through the store ad and her black coupon binder!! Thanks again. As I see the savings rolling in I will be happy to make donations to your site.
