Reader Question

Shelly,
I need help. I can't figure out a good way to organize my coupons and such so that I actually find the best deals at the right places. I often just get frustrated and give up. How do you organize yourself for shopping?

Ms. G

Well, I wish I had a great solution for you, but I will tell you what works for me. First of all and most important, you need to find a site that lists the weekly deals for the stores you shop at. I list Harris Teeter, Lowes foods, and the drug stores. Let me know if you have trouble finding a list, and I will help look for you. I actually print out or write down a list of items to purchase at each store.  I use that paper folded up to hold the coupons I will need for that store.  Next is getting your coupons organized to use. I have tried 3 ways of coupon organization. I actually like all three but they each require different legwork.

1. Clip and file in an accordion file or recipe box. (This one works best for people who only keep the coupons they know they want to use.) It requires clipping, sorting, and weeding out expired coupons. I quit this type of filing, because my accordion file became two. Then they became so big that they broke! I also found that often, I hadn't kept a coupon that I wanted for a great deal or moneymaker at the drug stores. Amount of work required (medium)

2. Clip and file in a coupon binder. The link is to the one I recently lost. This method works best if you want to keep all coupons in multiples. When you carry your binder to the store, you can get an occasional great deal that you didn't know about. This requires clipping, organized sorting, and looking for expired coupons. For some reason, this method took me a long time to use, but I loved it. Of course, it is not great if you are forgetful like me, because your binder is an expensive thing to lose. Most serious couponers use this method, because it works well. Amount of work required (a lot)

3. Insert filing. Since I lost my binder, I have been filing by insert in a large crate (I will post pictures after school). I have a small accordion file to keep my clipped coupons in, that I am keeping in my purse. This one works best for time crunched individuals. My only time spent is reading my list, finding the correct inserts, and clipping the coupons I need according to the list. I have to admit, that I have only been doing this one for about 3 weeks, but so far, it is working for me. This works best if you have a great list to use, and if your stores rarely have unadvertised specials (or if you're willing to go back for them). Amount of work required (small)

I want to encourage you to do what works best for you. If you can find the time, the binder method is my personal favorite. I am sure my other readers will chime in, and give you some advice as well! Let me know if you have further questions!

Today's Deals

So I spent a little more money today (don't worry, I am still under budget for the month), but I think it was well spent! If you want to know how I did this, check out my drug store picks and my Harris Teeter Super Doubles matchups!

Walgreens

I spent about $5.50 (I messed up a filler item, and couldn't use one of my RR), and I bought one more paper than I meant to buy too. I also got back $16 RR.

CVS

I spent .87! I got back $3 more ECB than I paid with! Money maker!!!

Harris Teeter

I spent $3.47 and saved $35.xx!!

So, for less than $10 I got a ton of stuff! The newpapers would have cost $8 by themselves!

Did you get anything exciting this week?

Mega Spending=Mega Saving!

How to Spend $100 on Groceries

Well, I have set myself a little different challenge tomorrow, and it seems the opposite of my usual challenges.  I am going to try to spend $100 on food!?!?!  I haven't been able to get to the store as much since school has started back.  I have a $25 mail in rebate off of a $100 grocery purchase (all on the same date), and I have the money available because I got paid today.  We have really been wanting some ribs, and they are on sale this week at Harris Teeter.  I have a list of 20 coupons for Super Doubles too.  I will go to Walgreens and use the $5 off $25, hopefully getting some food there.  I guess my challenge is to see just how many groceries I can get for $100.  (I want everything to be a great deal, or else I am just wasting my money.)  Any suggestions for super deals at Harris Teeter, Lowes foods or Food Lion that I haven't already posted this week?  I will keep you posted on my adventures tomorrow.  I am hoping I can get at least $300 in food for $100!  Plus I will get some RR and the $25 mail in rebate back!  This way, I should have groceries for several weeks, and I shouldn't have to buy anything for Labor Day weekend either!

Opinion Outpost Surveys

This summer, I joined a new survey site called Opinion Outpost.  I have already earned over $11 in doing just a few surveys.  I can't wait to get my check in the mail (I am going to save up until close to Christmas)!  I enjoy doing an occasional survey, and this company has been more active than any other company that I have dealt with.  If you are looking for an easy way to make a little extra money, I would definitely recommend them!

Swiffer Wet Jet Review

I love being a member of My Blog Spark! They have offered me some great giveaways recently ($30 gift card and Fiber One packs)! So, I was only too happy when they offered to send me a product to review (sorry no giveaway with this one). I recently came home to a large package at my doorstep. It was one of the most fun packages I have ever opened. The box contained this large case!

Much to my surprise, it talked to me when I opened it! It set me on a Swiffer Wet Jet mission. I wish I could play the sound for you, but I am not technically savvy enough. Well, I decided to put this kit to the test.

First I put the Swiffer together which was fairly simple. (It would have been even easier with the box and directions!) I did a quick 5 minute run over the floors with my vacuum, just to pick up anything big. (This was recommended.)

Then, I started "mopping". I have to be honest, I hate to mop! A lot! So my floors weren't sparkling when I started, as a matter of fact, I am embarrassed to show you this next picture. But I cleaned the whole floor in less than 5 minutes!

I know, I need to do that more often! So, here I am thinking, this thing works great, is quick, and is the easiest mopping I have ever done. In less than 10 minutes, my floor looked fabulous. Then, I got brave (actually the teacher in me wanted to follow the directions I was given).

My mission told me to use this jelly, spill it on my floor, let it dry, and clean it up. Well, let me say if you think something sounds like a bad idea, it probably is! (Yes, you know where this is going.)

Let me repeat again. The Swiffer worked great! My common sense was failing however. I will tell you that the Wet Jet pad soaked up the jelly like a diaper soaks up you know what! The only problem was where all that sticky was supposed to go. (It only took 3 swifferings with new pads and 1 mopping to fix it....) I mean, what were they thinking?!?! The best mop in the world wouldn't have cleaned this mess up!

To recap:

Positives:
1. Fast
2. Really Easy
3. Cleans really dirty floors exceptionally well
4. Coupons available
5. Doesn't feel like mopping

Negatives:
1. None, except use a little common sense. (If you wouldn't clean it up with a real mop, don't try to with the Swiffer.)

Although the Swiffer Wet Jet is a little expensive, in my opinion, the time saved was worth it. I am so glad, I got one for free! Now I will be looking for the refills on sale (with a coupon, of course)!

I hope you got a good laugh out of my mishap. Maybe someday I will laugh about it too!

Harris Teeter 8/26 Matchups (SUPER DOUBLES!)

I have worked some this evening on coupon matchups, but I know this isn't it. I will update this list again tomorrow, as I find more deals! I have been very busy with Open House and the beginning of school, so please feel free to let me know if I made any errors, or if you have any deals to add!

My Harris Teeter will not double or triple coupons that say DO NOT DOUBLE. If I have included any matchups with these kind of coupons, keep in mind that they may not triple. I usually just put that item back.

HT policy is to double 20 coupons PER DAY PER HOUSEHOLD. The registers are now programmed to do only 20 coupons per day. Let's all stick to the rules, so HT will continue to offer triples.

If the list looks confusing to you, go here to find common abbreviations for coupons. You may only use 1 coupon on items that are buy one get one free, but just buy one, because they ring up half price.

The e-vic item is 1 box of Poptarts for .77!

Success at the Drug stores

Well, I can't say I have limited coupons anymore!  I might even have almost as many as I started with! So I planned a couple of drug store trips today.

Walgreens

I had ordered my 20 free prints, and 4 8x10 scrapbooking pages (I got one free and the others were 20%, think Christmas presents).  The pictures came to $12.58.  I  picked up 3 tubs of wipes (can be used at school for cleaning). The paper cutter was on clearance for $1.87, and I also picked up another softsoap.  My total was over $25 before coupons.  I paid $20.76.  I received $9 in RR and have a $10 mail in rebate for the pictures.  The rebate was sent to me by one of my readers/fellow blogger.  So I spent a  real OOP of around $1.76 for all this!

Riteaid

I didn't do as well here, but still good!  I had to get the medicine, so it worked out.  I spent $18.76, and I will get $12.00 in rebates from Riteaid.  So $6.76 OOP, and the medicine was $4.99 of that!

I usually shop at the drug stores at the beginning of the week, but I didn't have any coupons then, and I have been really busy this week with school!

More Generosity

Man! I have really enjoyed checking the mail this week! (I can't wait until school settles down, and I have time to use all these coupons. I can now add South Carolina and Tennessee to the states that I have received coupons from! I think that makes 7!

Bargain Meal(s)of the Week at Harris Teeter

Harris Teeter has been making the bargain meal a little easier with their meal deals! But I want to still try to bring you some interesting alternatives!

Meal of the Week for $5.99:
2 lb. Chuck ground beef
8 ct. HT buns
8 oz. HT cheese singles
16 oz. HT baked beans
24-32 oz. HT frozen potatoes

I did some searching and adapted another recipe that sounds delicious (except I don't eat shrimp, forgive me)!

Shrimp Quesadillas

Ingredients:

  •   tablespoon butter
  • 2-pound bag frozen raw shrimp , thawed and tails removed (Buy One get Two free!)
  • 1 clove chopped garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lemon cut in half
  • 3 chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, plus 1 tablespoon adobo sauce (this could be substituted for less hot peppers and taco sauce, because adobo chiles can be spicy, and sometimes I even use rotel tomatoes instead of peppers)
  •  6 Mission corn/flour tortillas  ($1.69-$.55/1 08/09 SS)
  • Shredded Cheese to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large, deep skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp, garlic,  salt and pepper. Increase the heat to high and cook, stirring often, until the shrimp are just turning color, about 4 minutes. Squeeze the lemon juice over the shrimp.
  2. In a small bowl, chop the chipotles with the adobo sauce. Spread the peppers in a thin layer on each tortilla. Cover half of each tortilla with a single layer of shrimp. Sprinkle the cheese over the shrimp; fold the tortillas in half.
  3.   In a large nonstick skillet, cook 2 quesadillas, cheese side down, over medium-high heat until golden, about 2 minutes on each side.

I love chicken quesadillas, and I am sure (if you like shrimp) these are just as tasty! The original recipe that I adapted this from was by Lindsay Tkacsik. (I try my best to give credit to others genius!)

For other meal ideas, check out Erin at $5 dinners!

Fraudulent Use

You all know I want to do my best to be honest and follow the rules, so I decided after much thought to write this post.

I think someone or something has been fraudulently clicking on my sidebar ads (many clicks like 10-15 in a very short period of time), and this has caused my advertising account to be disabled. I may or may not be reinstated. I am asking my readers very politely that if I am reinstated, please only click on an ad if it has particular interest to you. Do NOT just click ads for fun or if you think it helps me. Clearly, that is not what the ads are for. I do think that my clicks have increased somewhat, because my readership has increased too (yea!). I truly hope this isn't why my account was disabled.

Google Adsense is a great company, and they keep track of the ads that interest us. I do not earn enough money through advertising to make a real difference, just enough to help supplement my giveaways and blog design. As a matter of fact, I was scheduled to receive my first payment soon (so I will never receive any money if I am not reinstated). I decided to share this with my followers in case someone was fraudulently clicking unknowingly. It is perfectly OK to click on an ad that interests you, as a matter of fact, that is why they are there. It is not OK to click on an ad because someone tells you to, or to help increase someones profit. This is true of any website.

I do want to make something clear : I do not write this blog simply for the money or any kind of compensation (although I do have ads and work with My Blog Spark), I write it because I enjoy it. The ads were a great bonus, and I was looking forward to receiving my first check to pay for my blog design. Just so you don't worry too much, whether I get reinstated or not, I do plan continue to write this blog!

When you spend $25 in products, you will receive a bonus $5 RR. I think this is $25 before coupons, or at least it was last time. Teamed up with some of the sales this week, this might make for a great deal! I am planning to go tomorrow when hubby gets paid, and the store gets a delivery. If anyone finds out about before or after coupons, post a comment and let the rest of us know!

Happy Shopping!

Generous Readers and Friends

Just because so many of you expressed your shock at the loss of my binder.  I will be posting pictures of my generous friends' and readers' gifts to me.  Today, one envelope came from a fellow teacher in Florida.  Another came from a nice woman on Hot Coupon World.  A coworker also brought me a bag of a few inserts.  There are still tons of good-hearted people out there!

Blog Hop Favorite Recipe

This is one of my hubby's favorite from my mother-in-law.

Cajun Chicken

1/3 cup of honey
3 T of water
3 T of Dijon mustard
2 T canola oil
1 t lemon juice
1 t garlic salt
3 t cajun spice
boneless skinless chicken breasts (I usually use 3 with this amount of sauce.)

Cut chicken into bite size squares, saute in oil, combine all other ingredients in a bowl, add mixture to the chicken, bring to a boil in pan, reduce heat and simmer for 20 min.

I usually serve this over brown rice. It is delicious!

Success with Limited Coupons

I got all this at Food Lion for $2.43!  I saved almost $10 by using a $3 bacon printable coupon and 3 $1 Food Lion Printables.  This shows there still can be savings for newbies and people with limited coupon access!

I went through all the coupons I have been given (quite a few but not a great variety) and the new coupons that came out yesterday, so I went to Harris Teeter triple coupons again.  I also had a $2.50 catalina coupon off my entire order.  I spent $7.29 on all this, and saved over $34.  There are at least 5 school lunches there, as well as several other things!
P.S.  I keep looking around in people's carts for my binder....what would I do if I saw it?

Menu Plan Monday

Monday-Dinner out with hubby
Tuesday-Turkey Alfredo (I told you I would finally make the turkey breast!)
Wednesday-Dinner with friends
Thursday-Brunswick Stew
Friday-Homemade Pizza
Saturday-Cheeseburgers on the grill

For more Menu ideas, check out Organizing Junkie.

Walgreens Photo Deals for this Week

Name my blog

Well, I really want to stick with couponteacher, but the domain name couponteacher.com and thecouponteacher.com are already taken.

I have thought about going with shellycouponteacher.com or nccouponteacher.com.

For some reason, I am hung up on the .com instead of another like .net.

Any additional ideas or input. I have been seriously considering getting my own domain this month. Of course, nothing else will change!

CVS and Walgreens Rebuilding

Well, I did great at Walgreens and OK at CVS today.

Walgreens

I had one $3 RR, and I used it to buy a Softsoap NutriSerum.

OOP $1.27 received a $4 RR

I used that $4 RR to buy my two papers (not too many coupons this week).

OOP $.28

I saved a total of $7.80, but have no leftover RR. I think this was great, because I would have spent $4 at the paper machine to get my newspapers anyway!

CVS

CVS was a little more expensive.  I started with a $5 off $20 purchase and a $5 printable for the L'Oreal. I just bought the two L'Oreals in the first transaction.

OOP $12.70 but I received a $10 ECB

Then I bought all the school supplies.

OOP $0.76 and I received almost $10 in ECB to use

I feel a little better having a few ECBs today!  I also wrote CVS customer service to see what might be done about my lost/stolen ECB.

As you have probably read a million times by now, I have very few coupons this week, but I am going to make the best of it! This will be good for beginners to see that this can be done!

I have a $3 RR to start, and I am going to use that to buy a Soft Soap Nutri Serum $3.99 FREE after RR. Then I think I will use that $4 RR to buy my two newspapers.

Riteaid

Nothing too exciting this week!

It is a slow week, either that, or I need to build up some coupons so these deals look better!

Coupon Preview 8/16

Go to the Taylortown Preview to check out what coupons will be in this week's paper.  I, for one, cannot wait for this paper (you might get tired of my complaining about losing my binder, so I won't do that here :) .  It looks to have some great coupons.  Remember to get the biggest circulation paper you can for the best coupons!

Happy Shopping!

Insert Method of Couponing?

I am thinking of using a combination/insert method of coupon organization. Going through the inserts and choosing the coupons I will definitely use, and file them in a small organizer (that can be kept in my purse). Then file I would the inserts into a binder or box to be kept at home. Before shopping, I would the sales online to match up additional savings from the inserts. I am thinking this might save me some time, and maybe some future heartache. I rarely find unadvertised and clearance deals at the store anyway, because I usually see them posted somewhere else first!  But I have always clipped all my coupons, so I am not sure I will really stick to this method. What do you do? What do you think will work best for me, especially during the school year?

I would love to hear all your opinions on this matter!

Super Saturday Savings: Almost No Coupon Edition!

I guess I needed a little retail therapy after my binder loss yesterday, so here is what I did:

I went to Old Navy and got 5 tank tops for $9.63!

I went to Walgreens with one coupon. Spent $2.20 and got back $3 in RR.

I spent a whopping 3 cents on these three notebooks at Office Max.

I spent .82 after Food Lion Printable Coupons.

I also grabbed a few things at Harris Teeter courtesy of Everprincess at HCW. This cost me a whopping .20!

I hit the jackpot at Office Depot. It was teacher appreciation day, and I didn't even know it! I got all this for $1.07 (lots of freebies), including a free breakfast (not pictured because it is in my belly.)

Whew....I am feeling better already!

A Post of Thanks for Kindness Shown

First of all, I would like to thank all of my readers who mourned a little for me when I lost my binder yesterday. Still no sign of it.

Second, I would like to thank a few fellow bloggers who are planning to help me out with some coupons in the mail.

Ann
Sara
Samantha
Kristi

A Big Thanks!

Third, I wanted to say thanks to Emileigh at church for combing through her coupons to bring me Sunday.

Last but definitely not least, I want to say a special thank you to a local Harris Teeter friend. She saw my post on Hot Coupon World and met me this morning at the store to give me some inserts. All I can say is WOW! Thanks to everprincess. I hope we run into each other again soon!

I was very upset yesterday, but I am beginning to see today what giving really means! I have a great network of people who care, and I wanted to say, I love you all!

I found this site---anyone used it?

This site claims to have complete inserts that can be ordered.  I am considering picking a few up, due to the loss of my binder.  Has anyone heard of it or used it?

Ebates

I am getting my Big Fat Check from Ebates sometime soon! It is for $10.21. If you haven't joined yet, you are missing out on a great way to get cash back from your online purchases!

Harris Teeter Bitter Sweet Success

So, here is what I got at Harris Teeter, when I left my coupon binder there.  It was pretty great, but definitely not worth losing my binder!

OOP $3.32, because I bought one big Wishbone on accident (otherwise it would have been $2 less).  Saved $28.xx

I guess this is my reminder that many things in life are more important than coupons! I may try to exchange the wishbone, but I might not be shopping too much in the next few weeks until I get some coupons built back up!

A Sad Thing...

A sad thing happened to me today, and I needed to blog about it, because I knew you all would understand.

I left my coupon binder in a cart, I left the store for 10 minutes, and when I came back, it was GONE!

I searched all the carts and left my phone number with customer service, but I know in my heart that it is gone for good.

All those coupons, hours of cutting, and the worst is the $20 in Extra Care Bucks....

I just feel sick to my stomach.  I know it is probably silly and in the grand scheme of life that, it will be fine, but that doesn't stop the tear that is rolling down my cheek right now.

Thanks for listening like always! Shelly

*Edit- Just called in again, and still no sign of it. Going tomorrow to check again with customer service. I am beginning to realize what a loss this is.  I had 4 free blockbuster movie coupons, $10 off a $10 purchase at JCPenney, and all my unused rebate forms in that binder as well as many many other things.  I have been printing coupons like a madwoman today, I guess you could say I am addicted...*

Another Great Giveaway!!!

Let me just tell you that August is going to be a month for giveaways around here, so keep your eyes peeled. My Blog Spark has teamed up with me, the Coupon Teacher, to offer some great giveaways!
This one is a prize pack from Yoplait Fiber One Yogurt.

I received my package in the mail yesterday, and promptly went to store use my free coupon to try this. Delicious! I have been eating yogurt everyday for a month for health reasons (mostly what I can find on sale), and this is a good one. I really like Yoplait yogurts the best, but I had never tried this one before today. (the fiber can't hurt either...) My mom tried it too, and she said it was one of the best she ever tasted. She loved the small size and great flavor! Yoplait and My Blog Spark are offering all my readers a $1.00 coupon. I am also excited to announce that My Blog Spark is offering three complimentary gift bags to my readers.

To enter, please tell me, what is your guilty snacking pleasure? Mine is ice cream, but yogurt is much better for me.

Make sure you leave me your email. Three winners will be randomly selected on August 18th, one week from today. Good Luck to all!

Thanks!

Harris Teeter 8/12 Matchups (TRIPLES!)

After spending all afternoon on my research, I don't have the brain power left to find a good scenario for using triples and the GM offer at the bottom.  Feel free to leave me a comment with any good ideas.  I will be out of town for the first day of triples, so hopefully my HT will still have stock left on Thursday!

Menu Plan Monday

Monday (company)-Grilled chicken, rice, fried squash, cottage cheese, and fresh sliced tomatoes.
Tuesday and Wednesday-Mom's choice at the beach!
Thursday-Spaghetti with meatballs
Friday-Chicken Bake
Saturday-I really am going to make the crockpot turkey breast....I really am! (This is the 3rd Saturday in a row I have said that!)

Herbed Turkey Breast (easy and delicious!)

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 T soy sauce
2 T finely chopped onions
1 T sage
1 t thyme
1 t marjoram
1/4 t pepper

In a saucepan, combine all ingredients listed above. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Pour over thawed turkey breast in crockpot. This will take several hours depending on size of breast and your crockpot settings. Make sure the turkey is cooked through before serving!

Today I spent $21 and change which would pay for the papers and the movie tickets. But...you know this isn't the end to this story.....

I also got $30 worth of stuff at CVS (above)..... and....

I got this (a $7 value)......and.....

this would have cost me $10......and......
