New Toy for Blog, Work, and Travel

I am posting from my newest great deal and toy. I have to give the credit to my hubby. He found me this awesome laptop for less than $360 including shipping and cash back from ebates. We got it on Newegg for a really good price! I have wanted one for quite some time now, and we could finally afford it! Yea!

Menu Monday

Monday-Smoked Sausage Jambalaya with Fresh Picked Okra!
Tuesday-Sticky Chicken (I haven't tested this one, but it looks good)
Wednesday-Dinner with friends
Thursday-Sour Cream Enchiladas
Friday-Homemade Pizza
Saturday-Grilled steak, grilled chicken, salad, baked potatoes, corn on cob

We are hopefully hosting a cookout on the 4th of July with 6-12 people. I would love to try a great dessert recipe if anyone has any ideas. My only two ideas are homemade ice cream or banana pudding with whipped cream.

For more recipe ideas, visit I'm an Organizing Junkie.

Drug Store Blues

Maybe you all can cheer me up, but I have the drug store blues. There aren't any deals that excite me this week. I may pick up some free Stayfree at Riteaid for my grandma, but sometimes they won't let you use a BOGO with a BOGO coupon. Does anyone see anything great or exciting that I am missing. Please leave me a comment if you find a hot deal. I am going through CVS and Walgreens withdrawal, but I just don't want to go and spend a bunch of money when I am fully stockpiled. I will pass along any deals I find, but drop me a line if you find a really great deal this week!

Last 3 Days for $10 Gift Card Giveaway!

I just wanted to remind you that I will pick a winner in my June Giveaway on the 30th. You must be following my blog in some way and you must leave a comment here. Good Luck!

Making Money from Rebates

This month I have a rebate check for $62.89 coming from Riteaid, and I only spent around $45. Plus I got tons of products.

Right now is a great time of year to find rebates in the grocery stores.

I have

$15 off 50 (ready to submit) for sunscreen, coolers, drinks, and ice.
$10 off $15 purchase of meat and 2 bags of charcoal.
$10 off meat and marinade $20 purchase.
$10 off produce and cheese $20 purchase.
$15 off $30 purchase on things for a BBQ!

These rebates are a great way to save on things you were already going to buy or splurge just a little for entertaining this summer!

What rebates do you currently have?

Stockpiling 101

What is stockpiling?

There are two ways that most bargain hunters grocery shop: stockpiling (a lot) and shopping for needs (a little) . Need shopping is buying what you need on a weekly basis like produce or milk or buying an item that you need for a meal plan during the week. Because it’s an immediate need, you often pay more than the lowest price for a certain item. When shopping for needs, always check the area sales flyers for the week. If you can't run to several stores, take your ads to Walmart for price matching. This will help you reduce costs on need-based shopping.

By stockpiling items you’ll eventually need, you will save hundreds of dollars each month. Supermarkets have about a 12 week sale cycle. (Most things go on sale about every twelve weeks.) There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, soup is mostly on sale during the winter and condiments during the summer. But no matter what, only a few items will be featured on sale each week. So if you shop only for what you need, you’ll save on a small percentage of these items and overspend on your other needs. Stockpiling with matching coupons and sales will help you buy items at rock-bottom prices. I use my sales flyers, other bloggers, and hotcouponworld to help me match my coupons to get the very best deals.

Most people find that it takes 3 to 6 months to have a well-rounded stockpile. When this finally happens your needs shopping goes way down. When I started my stockpile, I spent about the same amount as always, but was bringing home way more food/groceries. At the 6 month mark, I had reduced my grocery budget in half. Now, 18 months later, I only spend $100 per week on everything (eating out, beauty supplies, clothing, food, etc.) It has been a pretty amazing journey, and now I have the chance to share it with you!

Menu Monday

Seeing as I am at the beach this week, I won't be posting my weekly menu, but as promised, here is my lasagna recipe from last week.

Ingredients:

* 1 pound ground beef
* 2 large zucchini (about 1 pound), shredded (I didn't use this much,hubby doesn't like it)
* 3/4 cup chopped onion
* 2 garlic cloves, minced
* 1 jar spaghetti sauce
* 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
* 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1/2 teaspoon pepper
* 9 lasagna noodles, cooked, rinsed and drained
* 1 carton (15 ounces) ricotta cheese/ I used 1 carton of cottage cheese instead
* 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
* 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
In a skillet, cook beef, zucchini, onion and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir spaghetti sauce into beef mixture. Add parsley and seasonings. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Spread 1 cup meat sauce in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Arrange three noodles over sauce. Spread with a third of the meat sauce; top with half of the ricotta. Sprinkle with a third of the mozzarella and Parmesan. Repeat. Top with remaining noodles, meat sauce and cheeses.
Cover and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Uncover; bake 15 minutes longer or until bubbly. Let stand for 15 minutes before cutting. Yield: 12 servings.

Finale: $100 Challenge!

I made it! I hate to brag, but I am impressed with my shopping and God's bountiful blessings at my house. Well, okay, I have a confession to make. I found some (3) receipts for Food Lion totaling $2.89 and a Harris Teeter one for $5.29. That puts me at $108.08. With that money from May 25th-June 20th, I have added to my stockpile and fed my family heartily! I am beginning to see how the $1,200 a year family does it.

As I looked back at my receipts for this time period, I bought over 174 items for my $108.08. This included a hairdryer, thank you notes, toilet paper, laundry soap, expensive moisturizer, sunscreen, and cat food as well as a lot of food. I was even able to incorporate a few splurges here and there (like the ice cream at HT I forgot to blog about). I will admit, that I only bought three meals worth of meat for the entire month, but we get a quarter of a beef each year in January. I also have my entire extra freezer full of goodies and meat.

Due to this challenge, I have stayed under budget during a crazy time of year at my house (end of school year gifts, three birthdays in May, mother's day, 1 June birthday, and father's day). I have had some unexpected medical expenses during the past week, and most of them were paid with cash or my health savings account! I also have cash to take with me on vacation today. No charging needed.

It is easy to whip out the credit card when there are unexpected cuts in pay or expenses, but let me encourage you (and myself) to live frugally and stay away from the credit card companies!

CVS Savings Under Budget!

I found a great deal at CVS today! I went out looking for the money making deal that Mercedes blogged about, but couldn't find it anywhere. Instead I made one of my own! I finally got a $4 off 20 purchase in my email. This is a rare treat for me, and I didn't want it to go to waste. I only had $5 in ECB and $2.94 left to spend from my $100 Challenge. I found these Aveeno lotions for $7 each. I had a coupon for $10 off 3 positively ageless Aveeno items. I used my 4/20 coupon and my $55 ECB. My total was...... $2.84!!!! I earned $10 in ECB too!

I still have 10 cents to spend until Saturday...any suggestions?

Riteaid Deals!

I got all of this at Riteaid for $14.65. Plus I will get a $5 rebate. So my real OOP is $9.65. I saved around $46 in sales and coupons!

I used 2 $2 coupons for the reach floss, $1.50 for the Listerine, $5 and $2 coupons for the Loreal Skin Genesis Moisturizer (my fav and I am totally out: coupons found inside package), and the $5 off $25 purchase coupon.

I still have $14.25 to spend until vacation on June 20th!

Walgreens Flexibility....

Sometimes you just have to be flexible and not too upset when you miss the best deals. Yesterday, I shared with you my Walgreens Scenario. Well when I opened my Charlotte paper this morning, there were no John Frieda coupons to be found. Here I am with a $10 expiring RR and no great deal. Here is what I came up with instead.

6 Ragu used two $1.25 off 3 coupons
2 Skippy used two .40 coupons
1 St. Ives (filler item, couldn't find those coupons either!)
Used $10 in RR
OOP $6.22 and received $11 in RR

My receipt says I saved $21.80!

I still have $23.90 to spend until June 30th.

Saturday, June 13, 2009

My Sunday Walgreens Scenario

I have one $10 RR that expires on Monday. So I have to go spend it tomorrow. Here is the scenario I have worked out.

1 St. Ives Body Wash $2.99-$1.50 coupon=$1.49
2 John Frieda Root Awakening $10-2 $3 coupons=$4.00
1 John Frieda Weather Works (if included in sale/it is my favorite) $5-$1 coupon=$4.00
1 box of envelopes .67

Total before tax $10.16
Use 10.00 RR
Final Total .16 plus tax and earn $8 in RR.

Wants and Deals at Harris Teeter

I got the bag of salad for $1.09 (yes I know I have lettuce in my garden, but I am going to mix some in for a big dinner salad). The razor blades were on clearance for $3.67 and I had a $2 coupon. The curly fries are a treat for hubby and I. I paid $1.50 after the $1 coupon. The cheese was only .87 after a $1 coupon, and it is good pepper jack cheese.

I spent $5.50 and saved $10.49.

I still have $30.12 to spend until vacation!

$100 Challenge recap

I had all kinds of budget issues for May/June!

*Losing $224 in pay for May

*Spending some extra money on dad's birthday present that didn't work out (Can't say!)

*Teacher Assistant End of Year Gift ($45.00)

*other unexpected purchases ($75.00)

So starting May 25th, I issued myself a $100 challenge for the groceries/drug store purchase until my vacation on June 20th.

So far, it is going great! I still have $35.62 to spend, and I haven't had to even use my credit card or dip into my vacation savings! I will update you before I leave on June 20th!!!

6/14 coupon preview

There is only one Smart Source insert this week. My experience is that if you can get a huge circulation newspaper, you will still get some good coupons. Otherwise, this will be a slow week for you! (When I used to get my local paper this was the week where there were 3 coupons and 5 pages of ads!)

Mail Call

Today I got a $23.97 check from Riteaid rebates and a $3 check from a Pinecone survey.

Every little bit helps!

Last Minute Lowes Deal

I stopped by Lowes today to pick up a few freebies and found a deal that I hadn't seen. BUT it ends today. The Country Time lemonade is on sale 2 for $3. There is a printable out for $1.50 off 2. When I bought two, a catalina coupon popped out for $1. So I paid .25 each for 2 if you count the coupon for my next order! The catalina deal ends tonight, so I hope it is not too late for some of you! Even if it is, .75 each isn't bad either.

I spent $1.60. It was cute, the older cashier mumbled to her supervisor, "It only says $1.60."

I have $35.62 left to spend until June 20!

School's Out for the Summer! Any Questions?

Yiipppeeeee!

Now that I have some extra time, you all can look forward to even more deals!

Also, I am once again opening my comment section up for reader questions. If you have a question, I will do my very best to answer it for you!!!!

Garden Mystery?!?

I haven't ever grown bell peppers before, but I know this isn't good. My biggest pepper started turning black yesterday. It doesn't seem rotten and smells ripe. I am certainly afraid to eat it. We have had a ton of rain. Any readers out there who can help me out? What happened to my pepper?

$100 challenge

Lowes Foods

It is too late for these deals now, except for the Sunny D for free, but I picked up a few need items on Sunday that I forgot to include in my $100 challenge.

I spent $3.02, which leaves me $37.22 to spent until June 20th! I am baking an expensive cake tomorrow (I'll post the recipe), so wish me luck at finding my final ingredients at a great deal.

Sunday Dinner and Menu Monday

I had one squash and one zucchini ready when I visited my garden yesterday. Also, two of my biggest tomatoes were starting to crack. So I had the idea for steak, veggie kabobs, and fried green tomatoes.

Here is what I started with:

Then we marinated the steaks, skewered the veggies with a garlic rub, and floured the tomatoes.

Finally we enjoyed the delicious meal!

Weekly Menu:

Monday: Leftovers
Tuesday: Ravioli with red sauce
Wednesday: Dinner with friends
Thursday: Hamburgers on the grill with fresh salad
Friday: Lasagna with fresh veggies
Saturday: Cookout/birthday party with friends

Do you have a great recipe to share? If so, please leave a link in the comment section!

Riteaid Deals!

I am really excited about my Riteaid deals today! I was hoping for the Aveeno Positively Ageless Sunscreen so I could use my bigger coupons, but I still did well.

I used a $5 off $25, two $1.50 Aveeno, one $1.00 Aveeno, and $2.00 off the complete contact solution.

I spent a whopping $33.46, but will get $30.98 back in rebates from Riteaid. So I spent $2.48 OOP after rebates. I also have another rebate that the sunscreen will count toward as well ($15 off of a $50 purchase).

I still have $40.24 to spend until vacation!

CVS Deal

My CVS starts the Sunday deals on Saturday at Noon. So I picked up to Banana Boat Aloe Lotions for $7.39 each. I had a $2 printable for each from the banana boat website. Earned $7.00 ECB and spent $10 ECB.

OOP $1.16

This will be great for at the beach (just in case)!

I still have $42.72 to spend until vacation!

Saturday Savings

I got this Chicken at Food Lion for .10. Thanks Saving with Sara for the idea!

I spent $8.70 on all this using my coupon match-ups here.

I still have $43.88 to spend until June 20th!

Coupon Luck

Sometimes it isn't always about the deals. It just takes a little luck. I went to Lowes foods for some milk (need) and bacon (want). I just happened to grab my coupon for free oscar meyer hot dogs. The cashier entered the coupon for $4 instead of half price for the buy one get one sale, so I spent $2.70 on all three items!

I still have $52.68 left to spend until June 20th!!!

How does your garden grow?

I am so excited for my vegetables to be ripe! (So are the bunnies and I'm going to have to do something about them.) I am afraid that my first ones are going to be ready for picking in two weeks when I am on vacation! Oh well. Enjoy my nature!

Thursday, June 4, 2009

After using my coupon match-ups, I spent $6.60 on this at Lowes foods yesterday.

I have $55.38 left to spend until June 20th!

It Pays to Negotiate

I am so excited this afternoon. Let me tell you why...

I just got off the phone with the cable company. I know you are thinking, "Why is she excited about that?" Well, I am excited because, I have learned the art of negotiating with companies that provide services. I called today and was offered to keep the same channels in HD for the same price for another 12 month promotion (mine was ending), and he also added DVR service for FREE. No installation charges! These are the steps I took today, and I believe they can be applied to many services like phone companies and electric companies as well.

1. Always be prepared. Know what your bill is, and what exactly you are subscribed to get. Look at the companies website at new customer promotions. Have a discussion with your spouse about what services you really need and what services you want.

2. Call during the day or during normal office hours. When I call the cable company in the evening, I get a man from India reading a script. When I called today, I got a nice man from South Carolina who apologized for putting me on hold for two minutes while he looked something up for me. Enough said.

3. Know what you want and be able to back up what you say! When I said we don't want to add a cable phone, I meant it. I stated that fact very clearly. When I said that we would be willing to drop some channels to save money, I meant it, too. Don't make idle threats, because it just doesn't work. If the man on the phone had said he couldn't do anything else for me, I would have reduced my cable package.

4. Be polite. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

5. Ask about hidden charges. When the man offered to give me DVR service, I immediately asked, "Will there be an installation fee or service charge?" It pays to ask ahead of time so that you are better prepared.

6. Don't assume you are getting the lowest price possible. I learned this a few weeks ago when we upgraded phones. I was going to leave our service the same, because we had a great plan. It turns out that Verizon had lowered several of their prices on the basic plans like we had. Our phone bill will be $13 cheaper per month for two years!

If you follow these simple steps, you will start finding more money in your pocket each month!

If you have any tips to share feel free to post them here!

Walgreens Hidden Deal

So there is a Revlon Hair Dryer that earns $10 RR this week, and it is advertised for $19.99. Well....starting today it is on Mega Saver for the whole month for $12.99, and this week it still earns the $10 RR!

Here is what I did:

I had a $9, $2, and $1.50 RR.
I bought the hairdryer, a package of lettuce for my garden (.25), and pencils for my classroom (.32).

Paid with the RR and $2.01!
Earned $10 in RR! Pretty good deal for the kind of hair dryer I like. Mine is working fine, but as we all know, as soon as I would have passed this deal by, it would have blown up immediately!

I still have $61.98 left to spend until June 20th!

Menu Monday

Monday-Texas Roadhouse (with a birthday gift card)
Tuesday-Hot dogs, mac'n'cheese, and broccoli
Wednesday-Dinner with friends
Thursday-Easy Chicken Quesadillas with salad
Friday-Chicken Parmesan
Saturday-Baked Deer Steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans

Easy Chicken Quesadillas

2 medium cans of chicken
1 can rotel tomatoes, drained
Chili powder to taste

Mix and heat all these in a saucepan on medium heat.

Tortillas
Cheese (I like pepper jack.)

Spray a large nonstick frying pan with cooking spray. Place a tortilla down on pan and cover one half with chicken mixture and cheese. Flip after cheese starts to melt. Serve with salsa and sour cream.
